The dominance race is heating up in the world of artificial intelligence hardware, with two of the world’s most influential tech giants, Nvidia and Google, stepping into an even sharper competitive spotlight. This bold message came as Wall Street was wrestling with fresh uncertainty. Nvidia’s stock slipped about 3% after reports surfaced that Meta – one of Nvidia’s largest customers of GPU chips – was exploring using Google’s TPUs to help power its data centers. For investors, this gesture certainly hinted at a possible shift in the balance of power within the AI infrastructure market.

Google’s TPUs, by contrast, are application-specific chips, or ASICs, built for a narrower purpose: to optimize performance for Google’s ecosystem and its preferred machine-learning workloads.

Nvidia emphasized that the Blackwell generation is engineered for maximum versatility. Nvidia sells its GPUs worldwide, directly to cloud providers, enterprises, and startups, because of which it commands more than 90% of the global AI chip market. Google, however, maintains a more closed approach: It doesn’t sell its TPUs to outside companies but instead provides access to them only through Google Cloud or uses them internally for its own models.

The effect of this strategy became more apparent when Gemini 3, Google’s latest AI model, arrived and received wide acclaim for its capabilities, having been exclusively trained using Google’s own TPUs.
